Keep Your Home Clean with Regular Cleaning

As a tenant, you are responsible for cleaning your own apartment. In shared apartments, the flatmates are jointly responsible for cleaning the shared areas of the apartment (kitchen, bathroom, hallway and, where applicable, living room). Each tenant of a shared apartment is also responsible for keeping their own room clean.

Under the Finnish Residential Leases Act, tenants must take proper care of their apartment – which also means cleaning it regularly. You can find tips for cleaning your own apartment in the instructional videos below.

Keeping Shared Facilities Clean Is Everyone’s Responsibility

In addition to apartments, TYS housing locations also have shared facilities such as club rooms, laundry rooms, stairwells, saunas and shared kitchens. A cleaning company cleans shared facilities 1–5 times a week, depending on the facility and how frequently it is used.

In shared kitchens, each kitchen user must clean up after themselves, as the cleaning company only cleans the kitchen surfaces and empties the waste bins.

If you notice deficiencies in the cleanliness of shared facilities, please report them to our customer service.

Furniture or other belongings may not be stored in shared kitchens, stairwells or storage-room corridors, as they make cleaning the facilities more difficult and reduce fire safety. In the event of a fire, extra items may not only increase the fire load but also make it more difficult to exit the premises.

How Often Should You Clean?

Daily

  • Put things back in their places.
  • Wipe the stove and kitchen worktops.
  • Wash the dishes after eating/cooking.
  • Sort waste according to the type of waste and put it in the appropriate waste bags. Check the waste cupboard daily and take the rubbish to the waste collection point when the bins begin to fill up.
  • Use a floor squeegee to dry the bathroom floor (and walls) after showering.

Weekly

  • Vacuum floors, rugs and upholstered furniture.
  • Mop the floors with a slightly damp cloth when necessary.
  • Dust surfaces and remove fingerprints.
  • Clean the toilet and bathroom.

Every other week

  • Change the towels.
  • Change the bed linen.

1–2 Times a Year or Whenever Necessary

  • Wash the windows.
  • Clean the floors more thoroughly and wipe the skirting boards.
  • Wipe the kitchen cupboards and drawers inside and out. Remember to wipe the tops of the cupboards as well!
  • Clean light fixtures.
  • Clean the smoke detector twice a year.
  • Move the cooker and refrigerator away from the wall and clean underneath and behind them.
  • Clean the floor drain.
  • Clean ventilation valves and radiators.
  • Clean walls and doors.
  • Air and wash household textiles (pillows, duvets, bedspreads, rugs and curtains).
  • Thoroughly clean the appliances included in your apartment:
    • refrigerator
    • freezer
    • cooker hood and grease filter
    • oven
  • Clean and maintain your own appliances as well, such as your washing machine and dishwasher.
