It’s especially enjoyable to spend time in your own yard or on your balcony, particularly in the spring and summer. Spending time in a tidy yard or balcony makes it even more pleasant. Did you know that according to your tenancy agreement, it is the tenant’s responsibility to clean, maintain, and care for their apartment and any attached yard area? If necessary, the landlord has the right to clean or otherwise fix the yard or balcony at the tenant’s expense.

Now is a great time to spruce up your yard or balcony, getting it ready for summer after the winter. Even with just a little tidying up, you can make a noticeable change!

Please take the following points into account during cleaning:

  • Remove all unnecessary trash from balconies and yard areas.
  • Ensure there are no fire safety hazards stored on the balcony, such as car tires, old furniture, or household appliances. These are not allowed on yard areas either.
  • If you want to get a grill for your balcony or yard, we recommend using an electric grill. Please note that open flames are strictly prohibited. Disposable grills, small charcoal grills, and stick stoves are considered open flames.
  • Yard areas must be cleared of excess vegetation. Grass should be kept neat and short. Gardening tools can be borrowed from tenant committees, and a garden tool set is also available to rent from the TYS rental machine!
  • If you wish to enclose your yard area, you may use green mesh fencing between existing end fences. You are not allowed to extend the yard beyond the existing boundaries. Other types of fencing or makeshift constructions are not permitted.
  • Please note that it is forbidden to make any repairs or alterations to the structure of balconies or yards. This includes painting or modifying built structures.

Here are a few more tips for your cleaning:

  • Use a cloth and mild detergent to clean any outdoor furniture in your yard or balcony. You can revive your balcony by treating wooden surfaces and furniture with a wood oil suitable for the material. Rust on the metal parts of furniture can be removed with citric acid or sodium carbonate solution.
  • If you have a balcony, lift out any wooden or plastic tiles. Wash the floor and other surfaces with a brush and pine soap solution. Rinse with clean water and dry the surfaces.
  • If your balcony has glazing, wash the glass with a mixture of vinegar and dishwashing liquid. You can use window-washing tools.
  • If you have kept fabrics such as decorative cushions on the yard or balcony, wash them according to their instructions.

After tidying up, you can continue with the gardening and planting summer flowers to beautify your yard or balcony. Larger stores also sell lettuce and herb seeds, which you can grow for your summer table 🙂
