Rodents seek shelter near residential areas in autumn – Don’t turn your yard into a rat buffet!

Rats and other rodents thrive where food is readily available. Their numbers are at their highest in autumn, which means that more sightings are reported during this season than at other times of the year. As autumn progresses, rodents that have spent the summer in natural environments begin seeking food and sheltered places to spend the winter near residential areas.

Everyone can help keep TYS housing locations clean and rodents at bay through their own actions. Read below to find out how you can prevent rodent problems and how pest control is carried out.

How tenants can help prevent rodent problems

  • Do not feed birds or scatter food on the ground. As the weather gets colder, many people want to provide extra food for birds. However, this food also attracts rodents looking for an easy meal. So don’t turn your yard into a rat buffet!
  • Do not put food waste down the drain. Food scraps belong in the biowaste bin, not down the drain. Food that ends up in the sewer can attract rodents.
  • Put rubbish in the bins. Sort your waste correctly and make sure it ends up in the designated waste bins. Do not leave rubbish outside the bins.

Keeping shared outdoor areas and waste collection points clean also helps prevent rodents from settling in.

How are rodents controlled?

Anticimex Oy is responsible for rodent control at TYS housing locations. Above-ground pest control uses poison-free methods, such as electric traps and stations containing mechanical traps.

Pest control equipment is placed in places where rodents are likely to be found, such as along the exterior walls of buildings and in waste collection areas. Please do not move or remove the equipment, as its placement has been carefully planned to ensure effective pest control.

What should I do if I spot a rodent?

If you see a rodent in the outdoor areas or indoor spaces of your TYS housing locations, submit a fault report through the tenant pages.
