Looking for a student apartment for the autumn? Here are five tips for applying effectively!

If you’re planning to start your studies in Turku this autumn, it’s high time to also start looking for an apartment. The application process for TYS student apartments is already in full swing! Even though all our student apartments that become available in August and September are reserved for students starting their studies in Turku this autumn, there still won’t be enough apartments for all the applicants.

Here are five tips to help you apply effectively and better your chances of getting a housing offer from us.

1. You can apply for a student apartment before getting your acceptance letter

Waiting for the results of your entrance exam can be nerve-wrecking. We know it can be tough to plan for your future before the results are in, but we still recommend applying for an apartment ahead of time – even before getting your acceptance letter! Starting the process early will improve your chances of getting an apartment offer.

Applicants hoping to start their studies in the autumn have been able apply for an apartment with from the beginning of May. Just remember to add your acceptance letter or student certificate to your application as soon as you receive one, because you won’t get a housing offer from us without one.

You can apply for our apartments by filling out our electronic application form.

2. Do your research and set realistic criteria

On our application form, you are asked to set certain criteria for the types of apartments you’d be happy to accept, so please have a look at our apartment selection before filling in the application form. This way you’ll be able to set realistic criteria for your future apartment.

Setting unrealistic demands regarding the rent or size of the apartment will severly hinder your chances of getting a housing offer, so it’s definitely worth it to do your research. Please note, that due to a high number of applications, we cannot consider special requests (e.g. which floor the apartment is on or which way the windows are facing), unless it’s for a medical reason.

There is a high demand for student apartments in Turku, so we recommend applying for several different types of apartments in different housing locations. When you expand your application criteria, you will have a better chance of getting a housing offer.

3. Have patience

Not knowing where you’ll be living in a few months time can be stressful. Nevertheless, we hope you can remain patience while waiting for a housing offer from us, because repeated inquiries about the status of your application may actually slow down the processing of applications.

We start sending out housing offers for apartments that become available in August towards the end of June. These apartments are offered to applicants throughout July, after which we will move on to offer apartments that become available in September.

Our tenants can terminate their contracts with a notice of just one calendar month, which means that we have no way of knowing exactly how many apartments will become available in the autumn. This is also the reason we can’t estimate how likely it is that you’ll be getting a housing offer from us.

PS. We can’t give out the information of adult applicants to their parents, so please contact us yourself if you have any questions.

4. Don’t lose your apartment offer

Did you get a housing offer? Congratulations! During the summer, we can mostly make one housing offer per applicant. The offer will remain valid for four days, so remember to keep a close eye on your email inbox.

Please note, that accepting a housing offer is binding, so consider the offer carefully, but withing the given time limit.

5. No luck this time?

As much as we’d love to house every applicant, we simply can’t due to high demand. We send out housing offers will be based on the application’s submission date, but priority is given to students who will be moving to Turku from further away.

If you don’t get a housing offer from us during the summer, don’t lose hope, because apartments become available all year round. Your application will remain valid for three months at a time, but you can always renew it in the Applicant’s Service. You will get an automated email notification when your application is about to expire.

Good luck with your entrance exam results and the apartment search!
