Construction has begun on Kylänkulma, a new student housing location by the Turku Student Village Foundation (TYS). In the first construction phase, which has now started, three new apartment buildings will be built along Halistentie in East Student Village.
“In the first construction phase, 207 new student apartments will be completed. Most of them will be studios, but the development will also include one-bedroom apartments,” says Anssi Aalto, Real Estate Manager at TYS.
The principal and architectural design for Kylänkulma has been carried out by Arkkitehdit Hannunkari & Mäkipaja / Arkkitehtitoimisto Harris ja Kjisik. The main contractor for the project is Pohjola Rakennus Oy Suomi.
“It is great to be able to start construction of Kylänkulma together with TYS. The project will bring a significant number of new student homes to Turku and support the development of the Student Village area. Our goal is to create a high-quality, energy-efficient and comfortable development that meets the needs of future students,” says Kasperi Sillanpää, Production Manager at Pohjola Rakennus Oy Suomi.
Construction of the first phase of Kylänkulma is scheduled for completion in early 2028. The total cost of the project, which is supported by an interest subsidy from the Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland (Varke), is approximately EUR 22 million.
New homes to meet the growing demand for student housing
The Kylänkulma project will provide more high-quality and affordable student housing in a good location close to the campus area. Kylänkulma also has convenient walking, cycling and public transport connections to the city centre.
“Demand for student housing in Turku has grown in recent years. We estimate that we will receive approximately 8,000 housing applications in total this year, and there are currently around 1,000 applicants waiting for a housing offer. It is great that we have been able to start construction of a new development during these challenging times. There is a genuine need and demand for student housing,” says Risto Siilos, CEO of TYS.
