Do you know what a sorting mistake is?
All the different types of waste that can be recycled at TYS’s waste collection points, from metal to cardboard, are processed differently. Therefore, various waste collection vehicles visit these points: one picks up burnable waste, another picks up glass and metal, a third handles organic waste, and so on.
If burnable waste is sorted into the wrong bin, for example, into an organic waste bin, or if organic waste is placed in the bin in a plastic bag, that is a sorting mistake. Before the waste bin is emptied, the waste truck driver checks the bins for sorting mistakes.
What happens when a sorting mistake is detected?
If the bin contains the wrong waste, it cannot be emptied because its contents are not suitable for processing. The entire bin’s contents must be treated as burnable waste, and a separate collection for burnable waste must be arranged with a waste management company. This delays the emptying of the bin and could cause it to fill up.
Ordering a separate burnable waste collection and handling the entire bin as burnable waste also adds additional costs, which could lead to rent increases.
What seems like an innocent sorting mistake can therefore have far-reaching consequences. Recently, sorting mistakes have been more frequent than before.
It’s time for a change for the better!
We challenge all TYS tenants to a competition where we’ll find the best sorting housing location. We’ll tally the sorting mistakes of housing locations from March 1st to May 31st. Each sorting mistake will earn one point for the locations. The housing location with the fewest points will be crowned the winner in early June.
Take a look at your housing unit’s waste sorting station and start sorting. Among the tenants of the winning housing location, we’ll raffle ten 20€ Ekotori gift cards. If you want to participate in the raffle, complete the recycling test below and leave your email at the end to enter the raffle.
Good luck in the competition!
