Guide to surviving icy conditions

Although icy streets are part of winter, you can navigate them safely!

Below, you can find more information on how walkways are maintained at TYS housing locations in winter and tips on how you can personally prepare for icy conditions.

Walkways are sanded, and ice and snow are actively removed

In winter, we monitor the weather closely and aim to respond quickly to changing conditions. Our partners take care of clearing snow and sanding the walkways.

When the weather is icy, we try to sand all walkways as quickly as possible. Sanding is also done as needed in the evenings and on weekends.

In addition to sanding, we clear snow and mechanically remove ice when necessary.

Icy conditions can develop quickly – stay alert

Winter weather often fluctuates, with cold and warm temperatures alternating frequently. Walkways can become icy very quickly. That is why it is always wise to walk carefully, even if the walkways are generally sanded.

If you notice a slippery spot, please report it to us immediately by submitting a fault report through your tenant pages. You can also report a non-working yard light or other dark area where safe passage is difficult.

Even though sanding is done constantly, sometimes freezing occurs rapidly. For example, a spot that was sanded in the morning may have turned slippery just a couple of hours later. Please let us know so that we can re-sand hazardous areas without delay.

How to prepare for icy conditions:

  • Follow weather forecasts and look out your window to check the conditions outside before you head out.
  • Wear appropriate footwear with good grip. Shops offer separately attachable anti-slip devices and studs for shoes.
  • Move carefully and focus on walking (only check your phone when walking in non-slippery areas).
  • Allow extra time so you don’t have to rush on slippery surfaces.
  • If possible, avoid slippery areas by going around them.

Pay special attention to these hazardous spots:

  • When frost and mild weather alternate, water and slush can quickly turn to ice.
  • Streets can be icy even when the temperature is above zero.
  • It can be slippery during rain if there is ice or snow underneath.
  • There may be ice beneath the layer of snow.
  • Watch out for snow and ice falling from rooftops, especially as the weather warms up. (We clear snow from roofs and cordon off hazardous areas as soon as possible, but it’s still wise to stay vigilant.)
