Are you new to Finland and wondering how waste sorting and recycling work here? Join Sorting and Recycling in Finland – 101 for International Students, a practical and fun course designed especially for TYS tenants.
The course is held twice and one course takes place over two evenings. TYS tenants can participate free of charge.
Learn the basics of waste sorting
During the first evening, you will learn:
- Which waste categories are collected in Finland and why.
- Which waste bin each item belongs to.
- What kind of collection bins you should have in your home to make recycling easy in everyday life.
- What to do with waste that doesn’t have an appropriate bin in your home building’s waste collection area.
The course focuses on practical everyday situations, so you will leave with useful knowledge that you can immediately apply at home.
Get creative with recycling
On the second evening, you will explore the topic more creatively and get a hands-on experience of useful recycling and saving ideas in everyday life. Participants may choose a custom project that they like, for example
- Make a pot from recycled materials e.g. for a store-bought potted herb (or, if one is brave enough, for one that they grow from the seed!) A way to get more harvests from one herb and enjoy some greenery in the kitchen during the cold dark Finnish fall & winter months.
- Darn and mend a garment of choice. There will be materials and tips for different kind of patches, and an introduction to the most important item in a Finnish garderobe: the woolen socks – and how to mend them.
While crafting, we will brainstorm other recycling projects and share information on where to find Turku’s recycling centers, flea markets, and other circular economy operators that are useful for anyone living on a student budget (e.g. where to find 2nd hand furniture, bikes, phones, laptops, etc.).
