In May, tenants had the opportunity to come up with practical solutions to improve recycling.

How can recycling be made easier and waste collection points kept cleaner? TYS has taken on this challenge together with its tenants. In recent years, the recycling rate at TYS housing locations has declined, and more items that do not belong there have ended up at waste collection points. To find solutions, TYS has brought together ideas from tenants and a team of TYS experts known as the Waste Sorting Team. The goal is to make sorting as easy as possible and help ensure that waste ends up in the correct bins.

Tenants involved in the development work

In May, tenants had the opportunity to come up with practical solutions in two workshops.

During the workshops, participants discussed why waste ends up in the wrong bins, what makes sorting difficult and how instructions could be made more accessible to everyone. The cleanliness of waste collection points and ways to make recycling easier were also discussed.

Based on the tenants’ ideas, the Waste Sorting Team, consisting of TYS experts, started planning and testing different solutions. Some changes have already been implemented, and more are on the way!

Small changes for smoother recycling

""

The waste bins at all TYS housing locations have received new, clearer labels indicating the type of waste in both Finnish and English.

During the summer and autumn, various improvements have been made, particularly in the Student Village. Small litter bins have been moved from near the entrances of residential buildings to busier pedestrian routes. This makes it easier to dispose of small pieces of litter in the correct bins while moving around the area.

Waste collection points have been tidied up, and the waste bins at all TYS housing locations have been washed inside and out. The bins have also received new, clearer labels indicating the type of waste in both Finnish and English. Waste shelters are washed once a year, but now closer attention is made to their cleanliness throughout the year.

The waste collection points in the Student Village have also been given names to make it easier to report any problems to TYS. If a waste bin is constantly full or a waste shelter needs cleaning, please let us know! When we know where help is needed, we can address the situation more quickly.

A new solution is also being tested at the waste shelters in Iltakajo: locking the shelters. The trial will help determine whether locking affects the recycling rate and the amount of unwanted items left at waste collection points.

The cleanliness of outdoor areas will also be monitored more regularly in the future. A designated maintenance worker will patrol the outdoor areas of the Student Village, checking the condition of waste shelters and looking after the general cleanliness of the area.

Clearer instructions make sorting easier

In September, TYS organized two recycling courses for international students in cooperation with the Auralan Setlementti.

Recycling is easier when you know what belongs to each bin. In September, TYS organized two recycling courses for international students in cooperation with the Auralan Setlementti. The courses introduced participants to waste sorting and recycling practices in Finland.

Every autumn, all tenants also receive a waste sorting guide from the Southwest Finland Waste Management Company (LSJH) in both Finnish and English. Distribution of this autumn’s guides is currently underway.

New, clearer information boards are also planned for waste collection points, along with instructions on what must not be brought there.

We also want to hear more about tenants’ experiences. TYS is planning a tenant survey to identify challenges related to recycling: what has been difficult about sorting waste, for example when moving into a new home, and how well recycling fits into everyday life. This will help us focus our development work on the areas where support is needed most.

Working together towards better recycling rates

TYS monitors recycling rates and compares the results of the different measures implemented. This helps us identify which solutions work best and where further improvements are needed.

In addition to practical changes, TYS will provide tenants with more information about recycling throughout the coming year. Our goal is to make sure that sorting instructions are easy to find, waste bins are clearly labelled, and recycling is as straightforward as possible.

You can make a difference too! Sort your waste into the correct bins, do your part to keep waste collection points tidy and let us know if you notice any problems. Together, we can make sure that waste collection points stay clean, and our living environment remains pleasant.
