the European commission\u2019s RESPONSE project, funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, in which we are building a plan towards a climate-friendly and sustainable city by developing smart and carbon-neutral solutions of energy production, building technology and mobility. The project parties from Turku are the City of Turku, the Turku Student Village Foundation, Turku Energia, Turku City Data and Turku University of Applied Sciences.<\/p>\n

The project\u2019s pilot sites are \u2018lighthouse cities\u2019 Dijon (France) and Turku, which are both developing energy positive residential areas. Other partner cities are Brussels (Belgium), Zaragoza (Spain), Boto\u0219ani (Romania), Ptolemaida (Greece), Gabrovo (Bulgaria) and Severodonetsk (Ukraine).<\/p>\n

In this project, the parties will implement energy-positive solutions integrated in the housing locations and apartments in the Turku Student Village. The goal of these solutions is to turn the Student Village into an energy-positive city district by producing 120\u2013130% of the area\u2019s energy consumption through environmentally friendly means.<\/p>\n

In a nutshell, an energy-positive residential area refers to an area that generates more energy than it consumes on an annual level. The general goal of the RESPONSE project is to create flexible and safe cities while also improving the quality of life and mitigating the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n

We held two virtual information events to the tenants of the Student Village regarding the RESPONSE project in December. In these events, we shared more information about the solutions to be implemented in the Student Village area and in the apartments as well as about the cooperation to be carried out with the tenants. Additionally, all work stages that may cause disruptions as well as noisy work, water or power outages, changes to pathways or long-term exceptions to normal workhours will be reported to the tenants by email.<\/p>\n

The Student Village\u2019s tenant committees and peer operations will play a major role: active tenants, i.e. mentors, will increase awareness of energy matters in the area, share the tenants\u2019 ideas forward and inspire them to contribute in creating an energy-positive Student Village. The Turku University of Applied Sciences is in charge of the cooperation with the tenants.<\/p>\n

How to <\/b>get<\/b> involved<\/b>?<\/b>[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][vc_column_text]Mentoring<\/strong><\/p>\n

Within the project we will train a group of mentors<\/b>, who will familiarize themselves with the topic, collect the residents\u2019 views, as well as plan and create new activity to the Student Village.<\/p>\n

Planning of events<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the project, events<\/b> will be planned together with the residents. The events will be about sharing knowledge and finding solutions.<\/p>\n

Hackathons<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the hackathons residents as well as start-ups get to brainstorm<\/b> and present their solution ideas. The<\/b> best<\/b> ones<\/b> will<\/b> be<\/b> rewarded<\/b>!<\/b><\/p>\n
